Extending a Lifeline: WIDE ANGLE’s Food Aid Reaches Flood Victims in Remote Char Areas

As floodwaters continue to rise for the third time in Kurigram, a devastating crisis unfolds in the remote char areas along the banks of the Brahmaputra River. Thousands of people find themselves submerged in water, their lives upended by prolonged floods. Many endure days of starvation or inadequate nourishment. In response to this dire situation, WIDE ANGLE Foundation, a non-profit voluntary organization, persists in delivering essential food items to these helpless individuals, who have been rendered unemployed by the dual impact of floods and the pandemic.

On Friday, July 24th, volunteers from WIDE ANGLE embarked on a mission to distribute food packets to hundreds of flood-affected families in the isolated char areas of the Brahmaputra. Each packet contained vital provisions including 5 kg of rice, 3 kg of potatoes, 1 kg of lentils, 1 kg of salt, 1 liter of soybean oil, sugar, soap, and oral saline. These supplies aim to alleviate the immediate food scarcity faced by the flood victims and offer them a glimmer of hope amidst their arduous circumstances.

Jamela Khatun, a resident of Bilpara village, shared her poignant experience while receiving the relief aid. She described the relentless cycle of rising and receding waters, which had left her and many others imprisoned in their own homes. She expressed the anguish of having sporadic meals and the constant uncertainty surrounding their access to sustenance.

Humayun Kabir, the founder and Executive Director of WIDE ANGLE Foundation, acknowledged the escalating suffering of the flood victims as the crisis persisted. While government efforts and various organizations strive to assist those affected by the floods, the remoteness of the char areas of Brahmaputra River a significant challenge in ensuring aid reaches the most vulnerable communities. It is in response to this pressing need that WIDE ANGLE Foundation endeavors to deliver food assistance to the farthest corners of these flood-stricken areas.

Kabir further emphasized the impending sacrifice festival, Eid al-Adha, and the plight faced by many in obtaining meat due to the flood situation. In light of this, WIDE ANGLE Foundation is working tirelessly to arrange sacrificial animals for the flood-affected residents of the char areas, aiming to bring them some respite during this important religious occasion.

In this critical time, Kabir appealed to the affluent and capable members of society, urging them to step forward and lend their support. The challenges faced by the flood victims demand collective action, and together, we can make a significant impact in alleviating their hardships.

WIDE ANGLE Foundation’s commitment to reaching the most vulnerable communities shines through their persistent efforts to deliver aid to the remote char areas. By providing essential food items and working to ensure sacrificial animals for Eid, they strive to restore a sense of hope and resilience in the lives of those affected by the floods.

Let us join hands with WIDE ANGLE Foundation and answer the call to assist our fellow citizens in need. Together, we can make a difference and alleviate the suffering caused by this devastating natural disaster.
